1923-24 under captain E. Reg Edwards saw Oxford University, Pill Harriers and Northampton beat Newport for the first time. During the season 36 players were called on as Newport continued to play attacking rugby. They had excellent forwards in McPherson, Whitfield, Roberts, Edwards, Tom Jones, Roche, M. Williams, Hathway, Waite, Bown, H. Phillips and O'Leary. Fine play by outside half Vince Griffiths was rewarded with Welsh and British Lions selection.
Reg Edwards, Neil McPherson and William Roche were also selected for the Lions tour to South Africa.
13 three-quarters were tried and the pick were D. D. Herbert, Wyndham Jones, George Andrews, Albert Stock and Jack Wetter. Fred Baker started well but fell away and was replaced by A. I. Currey. Albert Stock played 37 matches and George Andrews 36 and these were the leading scorers also with 22t and 2dg by Stock and 22t by Andrews.
