Joined from Pill Harriers. Played for Newport RFC 1921-22 to 1924-25, including against New Zealand in 1924 (Lost 10 v 13) when he kicked a conversion. For the 1921-22 season he was praised by W. J. Townsend Collins in terms of "No man gave greater service to the side" and for 1923-24 "At fullback, Baker never played a bad game, and played many great games". In 1923-24 Baker played fullback for the England-Wales combined side against Scotland-Ireland in the Centenary game played at Rugby.
