Educated at Bassaleg Comprehensive School. James has played for Newport HSOB, Ebbw Vale, Bedwas, Cross Keys and Newport RFC. Member of the Wales Squad to Australia 2007. Newport Gwent Dragons U20 and 1st XV and was a member of Dragons Academy.

Joined Scarlets for 2009-10 season.
