A very brief report from The Times of 3rd January 1949:-
"RUGBY FOOTBALL"
"Newport beat Devonport Services at Devonport yesterday by two penalty goals and three tries (15 points) to a try (3 points). Because of rain the ground was treacherous underfoot, but Newport adapted themselves better to the conditions and were the superior side throughout."
"R. T. Evans, who was always prominent in the forward rushes, scored an early try, and G. Jenkins, the Newport full-back, kicked two penalty goals before the interval. In the second half Newport continued their superiority forward, where Morris, Bale, and Osmond kept McDonough, the Services full-back, busy with their lively raids. D. Phillips and Tyldesley added further tries for Newport. The Services try came as a result of a 50-yard run by Craven."
