The Western Mail of 17th November 1876 reported:-

"FOOTBALL"

"Last week a match was played on the Marshes, Newport, between the first 15 of the Newport club and the Ely club. Owing to the Ely club being late on the field, the match was not begun until four p.m., and was concluded at 5.30p.m., resulting in a victory for the Newport team by one goal. The game was well contested right through."

An additional and slightly more informative report from The South Wales Daily News of 17th November 1876:-

"ELY v. NEWPORT. A match was played last Saturday on the Newport Marshes, between the Ely club, and the Newport first fifteen. The game lasted nearly an hour and a half, and during that time the whole score was two rouges for Ely, and two rouges and a goal for Newport, the Newport men thus winning by a goal. The play on both sides was very good, the Newport having quite enough to do to hold their own. The Ely team were Messrs. A. Williams (captain), Radley, Green, Brufort, F. Vacell, T. Lewis, R. Gurling, T. Carr, T. Vachell, Bush, Shrewbrooks, Forwards; quarter-back, C. Cory; half-backs, Evans and Radley; goal keeper J. David."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
