From the match programme:-
"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"THIS AFTERNOON we extend a very warm welcome to our friends from Coventry, under the captaincy of Lee Johnson. Lee is in his second successive season as captain and will be looking for his team to continue achieving results and playing the attractive style of rugby that gave them a 49pts to 3pts victory over Walsall earlier this week. He will also be hoping to impress himself and regain a place in the England Squad for the Home International Series and World Cup. No. 8 Graham Bobbins, who scored a hat trick of tries verus Walsall will also be hoping to add to his two appearances for England and will need careful looking after this afternoon. A familiar face to the Rodney Parade faithfuls in the person of centre threequarter David Jones, who will be anxious to display his attacking ability against his old club, while the talented wing Eddie Saunders must be given little room to use his pace. One familiar face likely to be missing this afternoon is England hooker Steve Brain, who has just returned from coaching in America and is not expected to return to 1st XV games for a few weeks. His replacement, Andy Farrington, is considered by many critics to have a bright future and his confrontation with 'MJW' should provide a pointer."
"Since fixtures were renewed between our two clubs, today's visitors have failed to achieve a victory here at Rodney Parade and it is certain the Black and Ambers will be anxious to maintain that record this afternoon and also add to the victory they achieved last season at Coventry. Welcome, Coventry - your visits always produce rugby of the highest quality and we are confident that this afternoon will see Lee Johnson and his team maintain this tradition."
"Channel One Hospital Radio returns to Rodney Parade this season and it is hoped that all the excitement and atmosphere expected throughout the season can be transmitted to all those patients unfortunate enough to be in hospital. Two patients who no doubt will be 'tuned in' this afternoon are Football Secretary Doug Ackerman, who suffered a serious foot injury at work earlier this week, and Youth player Mark James who is still a patient at the Royal Gwent Hospital after breaking his leg during the pre-final game at the Snelling Sevens. Everyone at Rodney Parade wishes them both speedy recoveries and looks forward to welcoming them back 'on Parade'. Let's hope today's game will provide Doug, Mark and all other listeners with the correct medicine while tuned in to Channel One."
"Last Monday Richie Collins made his final appearance for a considerable time in a Black and Amber jersey prior to commencing a new career with the Police Force. We wish this talented flanker every success and are confident that he will maintain the enormous development in his play which has been evident during his century plus appearances for the 1st XV. There is no reason why he should not build on his highly successful Cup Final and Wales 'B' tour to Italy and gain full international honours. Good luck, Richie - both on and off the field - and we are confident that you will appear in a Black and Amber jersey again in the future."
" 'MJW' and his players will once again be organising many Fund Raising functions throughout the season and request the support of all members and supporters. The 'Tate' has proved a success, as has the '200 Club', while the sale of Christmas cards, paper and decorations will once again be organised. A date for your diaries is Sunday, 7th December, 1986 when a Players' Christmas Lunch will take place in the Rodney Hall. Tickets will be on sale from the players in the near future. Please ensure you don't miss the opportunity of attending what promises to be the ideal function to commence the Festive Season. Remember, the Players appreciate your support off the field as well as on."
