"WELCOME TO THE PARADE"
"TONIGHT'S famous visitors have occupied various positions on a Newport fixture list since our two Clubs first met during the 1892-93 season. Since the Second World War the Black and Ambers have played host to the Barbarians here at Rodney Parade in the last match of their Annual Easter Tour in Wales. Unfortunately, like many other things in rugby football, circumstances have changed dramatically during recent years and the famous touring team have been finding it increasingly difficult to field a fully representative side in the final game of a four-match tour. Following discussions between both Clubs it was agreed to switch the fixture to the beginning of the season and everyone trusts that it will benefit all."
"The Barbarians have selected a powerful team for tonight's game including no less than 12 internationals. Viewers of 'Rugby Special' last Sunday would have seen former Barbarian player and author of the latest book on the famous Club, Nigel Starmer-Smith, introduce a number of players who are on view tonight - Roger Baird, Paul Daniels, John Rutherford, Robert Norster and Bill Cuthbertson - while on the 'other channel' Clive Williams and Jeff Herdman were in the picture."
"We welcome 'The Alikados' in the persons of President Herbert Waddell, Micky Steel-Bodger, Geoffrey Windsor-Lewis and Graham Ferguson, together with their resident trainer Keith Harse. None of them is a stranger to Rodney Parade and it is certain that they will remember with pride their victory here last season by 48 pts to 20 pts, after a brilliant exhibition of rugby football."
"For those interested in statistics, our Clubs have met on 75 occasions, with Newport winning 46, the Barbarians winning 26 and 3 games being drawn."
"Welcome, Barbarians - long may you continue to grace Rodney Parade with your own brand of rugby magic."
"CLUB NOTES"
"AS members of the Rugby Football Union and the Welsh Rugby Union, Newport Rugby Football Club are delighted to welcome the Presidents of both Unions, J.V. Smith and Hermus Evans, as their guests for tonight's game. Both these men have contributed a great deal to rugby football over many years and deserve to hold the highest office available to anyone in rugby football in their respective countries. We extend our heartiest congratulations to them both and hope that tonight's game and the forthcoming international series will contain rugby football in keeping with their views."
"Following tonight's game the Newport players have organised a Disco to take place in the Rodney Hall, when players of both teams will be present. So why not stay behind and enjoy yourself and at the same time help the Players' Tour Fund?"
"Whilst the 1st XV have been suffering during the last fortnight, the United have been achieving two very good victories over Penygraig and Swansea Athletic and it is hoped that this will increase the confidence in the Club as the foundation for the remainder of the season is built."
"Welcome visitors to Rodney Parade this evening are the School XV's of Brecon and Monmouth, who we hope enjoy their visit and see a game to remember."
"Congratulations to the two new Barbarians, Robert Norster and Ian Paxton."
