From the match programme:-
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"During our long and illustrious history we have been privileged to welcome rugby teams from all parts of the world i.e. New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Japan, Italy, Canada and America, to play on our famous ground. All the players from these countries, irrespective of race, creed or colour, received a true rugby welcome, and todays visitors, the multi-racial South African Barbarians, under their Manager J.H. (Chick) Henderson are guaranteed the same welcome."
"They have impressed rugby people throughout the country with their behaviour both on and off the field, while their skills and quality of play have once again illustrated to the rugby world the talent that is available in their country. The experience gained on their tour will be invaluable to all the officials and players, and it is certain that rugby football through their respective clubs and coaching clinics will benefit from it."
"A number of personalities have emerged since the tour commenced, none more so than fullback Soioman Mhlaba, and outside-half Firol Tobias. Both are players of outstanding ability and Newport players who toured South Africa during the summer will tell you of the outstanding game Soioman had for S.A.R.A. in our 18 all draw at Port Elizabeth. It is interesting to note that 4 other players who played in this game, Bridgeman Sonto, Welcome Ntyongwe, Mbuyiselo Poro and Lungile Jonas, are also on tour. So a special welcome to these players and also to Assistant Manager Alfred Dwesi, who looked after us for the S.A.R.A. game."
"Other players who have enhanced their reputations on tour are mighty lock-forwards Hendrik Bekker and Johan De Villiers Visser, hooker Eduad Malan and flank forward Robert Louw."
"Manager 'Chick' Henderson who remembers Rodney Parade with affection from his playing days, has been delighted with the progress of all his players on tour, and with the quality of rugby they have produced. They will return home with the good wishes of all rugby people in this country, and with the knowledge that rugby football is truly a WORLD GAME."
"Welcome 'Chick' and your team, may your visit to Rodney Parade rekindle all that is best in our great game In years to come."
"CLUB NOTES"
" 'Lady luck' has at last smiled on Rodney Parade with the draw for this seasons Schweppes W.R.U. Challenge Cup competition. In the first round we have been drawn at home to Bargoed, while if we are successful we will have another home game versus the winners of the Pontycymmer v Chepstow tie in the second round. The bookies are already cutting their odds on us reaching to the final!!!!"
"Supporters and members are reminded that the following items are now available from the Club office or Campbell Black, with the profits going into the Players Fund - Club Sweaters, Rugby Jerseys, Sweat Shirts, Ties, Pinnits, and Rugby Club Diaries. The lucky programme winner from our game versus Suburbs was one of the Suburbs supporters party, so instead of accepting the "Torcross Van Hire Voucher" he received a club sweater. The voucher will now be used for the Lucky Progtamme winner during our cup game versus Bargoed."
"Why not have an early lunch tomorrow, and come along to Bedwas to lend vocal support to the Youth team in their semi-final of the Rocyn-Jones Cup versus the home club, kickoff 2.30 pm."
