"CLUB NOTES"
"The United have had an outstanding season and on the opposite page is a complete breakdown of their score sheet for the season. It shows that they have played an outstanding brand of attacking rugby, which has brought them close to a thousand points for the first time in the history of the club. These notes had to be at the printers before the result of Wednesday's game versus Newport H.S.O.B, was known but supporters can be assured that no matter what the balance required is, the United will try everything possible to achieve the magical figure when they entertain Ynysddu here at Rodney Parade, on the 23rd April. Why not make a date in your diary and be here to see history created."
"With the 1st XV also having such a fine season, the pool of talent available here at Rodney Parade should ensure that the future of the Black and Ambers is in the right hands. The Youth XV have also had a good season under their Captain Gerald Palmer as their record opposite shows. All the players at Rodney Parade will wish to express their thanks to coaches John Ryan, Sid Jeffries and Bryn Williams. These three have worked tremendously hard and must be very pleased with the results. Even if those illusive titles, the Championship and Merit Table evade the 1st team, it has been a season that has seen the club re-established in the eyes of the rugby world. Who knows, next season may see a Black and Amber man wearing the Red jersey of Wales again, it is certainly long overdue!!"
"Three 1st XV players, Leighton Davies, Glyn Bram and Ken Davies have all scored a century of points this season, a truly remarkable record. While centre Gareth Evans could make it four before the end of the season. Records have certainly been broken this season, but it is interesting to think how long they will stand under the modern day scoring system."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"Last week the 'Exiles' received a severe set back in their recovery, when 'Men of Gwent' in the form of Newbridge achieved an outstanding victory at Old Deer Park, Richmond, by 48 pts. to 7 pts. The recovery under skipper Mike Roberts, followed a disastrous opening period, during which the 'Black and Ambers' returned from Old Deer Park, the victors by 23 pts, to 9 pts."
"Mike Roberts must have been pleased with the teams recovery as he was a key figure in the great London Welsh sides of the late 6O'S and early 70's. Most players from that era have either retired or moved elsewhere, and this season is reported to be the last in London for the great J. P. R. Williams. Next season he will be returning to his home town club, Bridgend. Some clubs have all the luck! It is always sad to see great teams pass into history, and although R. H. (Bob) Phillips, Billy Hullin, John Taylor (how good it is to see him playing again, following his serious injury), and Tony Gray are still playing, 'old father tyme' makes no exceptions. All we can say from Newport is 'thanks for the memory'."
"The club are in the process of rebuilding, they must be pleased with the form of British Lion Clive Rees. Internationals Keith Hughes, Jim Shanklin and Newport product David Rees in the three-quarter line, while John Vaughan, John Mansfield and Eddie Powell are certainly giving the skipper every help up front."
"Newport first played London Welsh on Boxing Day 1885, when they achieved victory at Rodney Parade by 2 goals 1 try to 3 tries. They first visited London in 1902. The Exiles had to wait until the 19th April 1930 for their first victory, this was by 8pts. to 7 pts. at Rodney Parade. This was quickly followed by their first victory in London by 12 pts. to 8 pts. in November 1930."
"The full record up until the 2nd World War reads, P47, Newport 36, London Welsh 9, Drawn 2, They achieved the double in 1937-38. Record since 2nd World War, P60, N36, LW20, D4, They achieved the double in 1967-68, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1972-73. Victories at Rodney Parade, 1930, 1938, 1947, 1949, 1954, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973."
