"Oxford University pay Newport the biggest compliment of the season in fielding a team comprising eleven Blues and five Internationals at Rodney Parade to-day. Normal procedure in Varsity football this term is to build up for next season's Varsity match, and in the case of Oxford this building will be around only three old Blues, but such is the importance of the occasion that Oxford are bringing down their strongest side, greatly to the delight both of Newport players and Supporters. Their back division includes internationals Botting, Boobbyer, Newport's Trevor Brewer, and Hofmeyr, with Blues C. E. Winn and Green, while in the pack G. L. Bulard, the captain, has with him the English International H. D. Small and Blues in Emms, Hefer, Walker and Griffith. Newport are also at strength. Five threequarters are selected, and it is intended that Bryn Williams, who has missed only one game this season - on the occasion of a Welsh Trial match - should take a well-earned rest and Ken Jones to move into the centre to partner Ross. In the forwards M. Everson will continlie to deputise for Tom Sterry, who still nurses an injured ankle."
"To-day's mid-week game gives many people the rare opportunity of witnessing a Newport match, and as they would, therefore, miss most of our publications, here are a few of the most interesting facts about the Newport record this season. In the 22 games played and won to date, the Newport line has been crossed only 8 times in the 74 points scored against the team. Newport have, themselves, registered 75 tries. Ben Edwards, with 15 penalty goals and 27 conversions in 20 appearances has a tally of 99 points. A successful kick this afternoon would raise a big cheer for this great alround forward and goal-kick. The try scoring has been, widely spread over the side, John Lane being ahead with 16 tries."
"To-day's game commences Newport's hardest run of matches for the remainder of the season. On Saturday they travel to Leicester who, at strength, must be the present best English Club side. There follows Cardiff (away), Blackheath (home) and the last Cardiff game (home) on the Saturday prior to the Wales v. Ireland International at Cardiff."
