From the match programme:-
"Newport entertain Plymouth at Rodney Parade today, and this English side - among the oldest on Newport's list - are always most welcome visitors. Plymouth have not beaten Newport since the War, but there have been many hard, close tussles between the Clubs, among which was the entertaining home game of last season, which Newport won by 9 points to 5. At Plymouth, in the return match Newport, reserving as they often do some of their best form for the Devon Tour, played brilliantly to win by 29 points to 6."
"At Pontypridd today the first contestants for International honours appear in the first of the season's Welsh Trial matches. The selectors have spread a wide net to include and test much of the talent from the lesser known Clubs, and their[sic] can be no disputing such policy. From the Newport team, Roy Burnett, Bryn Williams and Ben. Edwards have been selected for the Pontypridd Trial. Their form this season has deservedly won recognition in this initial stage to International honours, and it is likely that other Newport players, not in the Trial today, will also be strong contestants with a continuation of present form."
"With such a talented United side - also not yet beaten this season - Newport have experienced little difficulty with team selection for today's game. R. D. Owen moves to outside half - his normal position - in the absence of Roy Burnett, while the two centre positions thus left vacant are filled by Lyndon Smith, who has already made four first team appearances this season, and Hedley Rowland. Hedley will be playing his first game for Newport this season - after, a successful try-out with the United last Saturday - following the injury to his hand in the early Trial Matches. In the forwards, L. E. T. Tones is fit to resume his place in the side, and Ian Ford will pack with him in the second row of the scrummage. Newport make one further change ini their side - at full back, where Malcolm Lewis, a strong player with a long kick, is selected following consistent promise with the United team. Altogether - despite the Welsh Trial - this looks a most interesting Newport side who should fully maintain the high standard of play so delightfully provided this season."
