The Times of 6th April 1920 reported this game as follows:-
"NEWPORT V. THE ARMY."
"Newport beat The Army, at Newport, yesterday, by five goals and five tries (40points) to nothing."
"As the score suggests, Newport were superior in every position, and, although Captain Fitzmaurice kicked and ran well, and Lieutenant Baker-Jones also was repeatedly prominent in defence, the Newport team did practically as they liked, particularly after the first 20 minutes in the second half. Their combination was dazzling, and they pased with the greatest daring and confidence. The result brings Newport's total number of points this season to 567. J. Shea had one of his best days, and his great pace and clever side-stepping enabled him to score four of the tries. Another player who particularly distinguished himself was E. Hammett, whose unselfishness led to several tries. The Newport pack not only controlled the scrummages, but also did splendid work in the open. Several of the tries were due to passing by the forwards. There were 10,000 spectators. The sides were:-"
"NEWPORT.- F. W. Birt, back; R.C. S. Plummer, J. Shea, E. Hammett, and A. E. Morgan, three-quarter backs; W. J. Martin and J. Wetter, half-backs; H. Uzzell, L. Attewell, N. McPherson, F. Jones, J. Radford, R. Edwards, M. Williams, and J. Whitfield, forwards."
"THE ARMY.- Captain W. M. Showen, back; Lieutenant H. L. V. Day, Lieutenant H. G. Dobbie, Captain W. C. Wilkins, and Captain J. C. Fitzmaurice, three-quarter backs; Lieutenant Schofield and Lieutenant E. R. Baker-Jones, half-backs; Major W. B. Roderick, Lieutenant S. R. McMeckan, Lieutenant J. Franklin, Lieutenant Tittle, Guardsman Bates, Lieutenant J. N. O. Corbett, and Lieutenant Vernon, forwards."
It will be noticed that the report lists only 14 players in The Army team.
