17th November 1890 saw the Birmingham Daily Post report this game as follows:-
"MOSELEY V. NEWPORT. – Played at the Reddings. All through the game was very even, and one in which the whole of the players rather than individual members of the respective teams showed to advantage. The teams were very well matched, and from the beginning to end it was difficult to forecast the result. In the first half the Moseley men were frequently in the visitors' quarters, but they could not score owing to the excellent defence of the Newport backs. Morgan at three-quarters, and Sloper at half-back, were very prominent for the visitors, the latter forcing Moseley to touch down. The interval came with only one minor point to the credit of Newport, Moseley not having scored. During the second half the Newport men maintained a continued and effective attack, compelling the home team to save twice. The Moseley men could not make much headway, but owing to the exertions of Robertson and A. Rogers, they defended excellently. Yates tried twice to get away, but each time was brought down. The collaring of Robertson and the dribbling of Lean and Eagles were much admired. The match ended in favour of Newport by 3 minor points to 1."
