The Western Mail of 12th February 1877 carried the following brief report:-

"FOOTBALL"

"NEWPORT V CARDIFF - On Saturday afternoon a football match between the above clubs was played in the Sophia Gardens field, Cardiff, resulting in a victory for Newport by one try, and two touches down. The following were the sides: - Newport, Messrs. T. B. Jones, back; C.H. Newman and A. Goss, jun., half-backs; J. M. Wood and T. Spittle, three-quarter backs; Capt. W. Phillips, C. H. Collins, J. Richards, A. Goss, sen., C. Phillips, A. Newman, R. Loaue [editor: Lane ?], R. Jenkins, Ll. Evans, and V. A. Julius, forwards. Cardiff: Messrs. C. Richards, back; W. Phillips and R. Foa, half-backs; J. Herbert and E. Fry, three-quarter backs; Capt. T. J. D. Selby, E. Williams, J. S. Thomas, S. Decandia, W. Thomas, T. David, B. Girling, R. Girling, W. G. Jones, and F. S. Thomas. Mr. D. W. Jeffreys of Swansea, acted as umpire, and his decisions were in every instance satisfactory to both sides. The game was excellently played, the time being one hour and a half."


* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.
