The Monmouthshire Merlin of 3rd March 1876 reported:-

"FOOTBALL - Newport v Panteg - This match was played on the Marshes, on Saturday afternoon, in very disagreeable weather. The ground was , through the recent heavy rains, partially flooded. The match resulted in an easy victory for the Newport team by 4 goals, 3 tries, and several touch-downs, to one touch-down gained by Panteg; but it must be said that the visitors played three men short, besides this being their first match of the season. The tries were gained by T. M. Phillips, Stone, and F. Phillips; one was the result of a very fine run by T. M. Phillips, who ran half the length of the ground. The goals were kicked by W. C. Phillips. J. Richards was the prominent player for Panteg. The Newport team were - T. M. Phillips and H. Gething, half-backs; C. H. Newman, three-quarter back; W. C. Phillips and Taylor, backs; Leonard (captain), W. Phillips, Goss, Stone, F. Phillips, W. S. Davies, H. Gould, Dulin, Thomas, and Scantlebury, Forwards."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
