Newbridge,   28 January 1989
Newport spurned the chance of a surprise victory with a second half Neil James try being the single crucial score that separated the sides. It was an error ridden and yet typically thrilling cup-tie. Newport had been given little chance of victory going into the game, but put up their best performance of the season especially up front. The forward battle resembled the Somme with neither side offering much behind the scrum. The conditions dominated handling and kicking. Gary Abraham cancelled out an earlier Paul Turner penalty goal to make it all square going into the second-half. Newport threw everything they had into all out attack but it was James who clinched the spoils with Newbridge defending brilliantly in a frenzied last twenty minutes.
