Swansea University,   24 January 1987
Newport won comfortablly but probaly under estimated the opposition. The students forced Newport to battle every inch of the way and in a gruelling second half they succeeded in restricting Newport to a solitary try by Tony Coombes. The University showed an enthusiastic approach and they tackled tenaciously, covered cooly and efficiently, passed swiftly and ran speedily and determinedly. The greater experience and weight of the Newport pack again proved the decisive factor but unfortunately the amount of possession they won was not fully exploited by their backs. Marc Batten scored early on in a cracking start for the home side. A Paul Turner interception near halfway gave Newport a 13-0 interval lead. Tony Coombes? try put the seal on Newport's win in a tight second half.
