Neath,   25 February 1984
Rd 4 (Feb 25th 1984) Neath (A) 11-25L
Newport travelled to the Gnoll confident that they could brush aside their poor away form and clinch a place in the last four of the competition but those hopes were torn to shreds by a determined Neath side who stuck to their task doggedly and showed Newport what commitment is all about. Newport were expected to make a close fight of it but in the end it turned out to be a mini rout , only a last minute try by Rger Powell prevented the scoreline from looking far worse. Only David Waters and Roger Powell played anywhere near their best. Newport's backs were completely out-played and Neath outside half Jonathon Davies having his first senior game since a lengthy lay off proved to be a revelation, his tactical kicking was first class and almost everytime he ran with the ball Newport were in trouble.
Neath led 10-3 at the break but the real killer blow occurred early in the second half when Newport conceded a try after they had been in possession the backs began to launch an attack, but Parker was tackled by Bridgewater and three Neath players were on the scene in no time at all and Keron Jones touched down for a try from the turnover - a score that knoocked the stuffing out out of Newport.
