From the match programme:-
"PRESIDENTS MESSAGE"
"Today we are delighted to welcome Newport RFC to Bryncoch. Naturally our thoughts go back to the 9th November 1974, when we were similarly drawn at home to Newport. The match unfortunately was never played. Let us hope that todays game will recompense supporters of both clubs."
"Newport RFC are known to all rugby followers in Wales and overseas they have achieved impressive results over many years. We at Bryncoch are honoured to have such illustrious opponents this afternoon, we look forward to an entertaining and enjoyable game."
"County Councillor Roy Jones"
" President Bryncoch RFC"
"CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE"
"As Chairman of Bryncoch RFC may I on behalf of our members welcome Newport RFC to Bryncoch this afternoon. The Welsh Cup brings excitement to any club who is fortunate to draw such opposition as we have today. We have reached this stage of the Welsh Cup with Bryncoch enjoying their best start to a season for many years. However cup football is a very different ball game, as Newport have previously experienced when they last visited West Wales in the Cup. So everyone this afternoon will be looking for a match full of excitement and good football in the true Welsh sportsmanship spirit. Finally I thank you for your continued support and hope that you will enjoy an afternoon of good rugby."
"Dennis Davies"
" Chairman Bryncoch RFC"
The match itself:-
Bryncoch put up a tremendous struggle in this first round game, often hustling Newport out of their stride. Bryncoch were 0 v 9 down at HT and were rocked minutes after the interval by a Justin Robinson try but continued to fight and a Newport whitewash did not emerge. Newport always had the game under control, dominating the line-outs but not always taking full advantage. Andy Phillips was content to play the kicking game, restricted by the narrowness of the pitch and was reluctant to spread the ball to the wings. Richie Collins was the most impressive of the Newport pack. Bryncoch who trained with Neath in the week leading up to the game were rocked in the first ten mins with a Chris Williams try and a Phillips penalty goal and from then on Newport were always in control.
