Newbridge,   03 January 1976
Newport battled their way into the quarter-finals with a hard fought but fully deserved 15-3 victory.
Newbridge never fully recovered from a slip that enabled wing forward Geoff Evans to score an
opportunist try in the 2nd min. A late Gareth Evans drop goal and a Glyn Bram penalty goal proved
enough to dash Newbridge?s hopes of an upset. Newport led 9-3 at HT thanks to Geoff Evan?s try
converted by Glyn Bram who also kicked a penalty to a penalty goal by Newbridge?s Tony Browning.
In a tense and evenly matched 2nd half it was the defenders who came out on top after a 1st half
that contained flashes of exhilarating running rugby often stretching Newbridge's defence to near
breaking point. The match often reached boiling point as the two packs struggled for possession.
Newbridge clung on for 37 mins of the 2nd half with solid defence but little attacking initiative.
