From the match programme:-
"CLUB NOTES"
"The air of West Wales once again proved too much for the Black and Ambers last Tuesday when the 21-10 defeat sustained at Aberavon ended a spell of fine victories. It has certainly been a disappointing week for Captain Colin Smart who failed to gain his expected place in the England v South trial match before losing at Aberavon. But everyone at Rodney Parade is well aware of his great determination and are convinced he will soon have 'Ryans Express' back on the right rails as well as continuing his quest to wear the England jersey."
"The United under captain David Rogers continue to delight their faithful band of supporters with a brilliant brand of rugby and the depth of talent now available in the club in many positions promises a fine future. While talking of young talent, it was good to see David Sanders back in action at Aberavon and also the form of David Waters in his first team outings. The news on Richard Taylor who received a nasty facial injury versus Cardiff is also very encouraging and it should not be too long before he is challenging for a first team spot once again."
"Any member or supporter who is having difficulty in selecting a Christmas present, should take a look at the special tie on sale at the Club Office or behind the Club Bar struck to mark the occasion of the Newport v Australia game. Priced at £1.50 each they could solve your problem. Tickets for the Dance following the Australian game are also on sale at the same venues priced 60p. They can also be obtained from Mr. Campbell Black."
"Please remember that we play Harlequins home next Friday evening under floodlights kick off 7.1 5 p.m., and not away as listed on your fixture lists."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This is the second time in the last three years that we have had the opportunity of welcoming Burry Port, affectionately known as the All Blacks, to Rodney Parade. We are certain that they arrive with many happy memories of their last visit and will prove stern opposition."
"Formed in 1881, when they played Llanelli Rovers on Good Friday, Burry Port have proved a very healthy and happy club. Their earliest honours were gained when Willy Lewis and Jackie Williams both obtained Welsh trials."
"In 1947 the Club obtained W.R.U. status and gained entry into the West League. Success in this league is not easily obtained, but following a great deal of hard work the team carried off the Section 'A' Championship last season, and were defeated in the championship semi final by Llandybie who carried off all the Leagues trophies."
"The club have produced 4 Welsh Internationals in the persons of Howard Davies (capped before and after 2nd World War), Griff Bevan, Les Williams and Geoff Evans. While Garreth Jenkins and Hefin Jenkins of Llanelli are Burry Portians."
"Unfortunately flanker David Jones who is in his fourth year of captaincy is unable to play today through injury, but is confident that the team under Coach Johnny Johns (Ex Llanelli and Pontypridd) will cause a great deal of concern to the Newport team. The clubs record points scorer Dennis Lewis has already scored over a hundred points this seasun."
"Welcome Burry Port, we are pleased to see you again."
The match itself:-
Burry Port's tireless defence and spoiling tactics made Newport fight every inch of the way for their 16-3 victory. After taking an early lead through a Dennis Lewis penalty they held on grimly and led at HT. Then two lapses early in the 2nd half enabled Newport to secure a 3rd round place. The Newport pack dominated winning ball in abundance, but the back division showing little flair failed to pierce a stubborn Burry Port defence although Burry Port offered little to offer in attack.
Newport should have sealed a victory sooner than they did. After trailing for 52 mins, they eventually cracked the defence. First hooker David Ford crashed over in the corner from a line-out and then Lyn Jones was on hand to fall over in pursuit of an Allen Evans kick ahead with Leighton Davies converting. A determined run earned Jeff Martin a try in the dying moments and outside-half Leighton Davies's superb touchline conversion rounded off the scoring.
