A 11 minute Newport blitz midway through the 2nd half when they scored 24 pts blasted battling
Beddau out of the cup. Brave Beddau were beaten 34-3 after a bustling 1st half in which they stunned
Newport with their wholehearted efforts and were only 3-4 down. However in the 2nd half they wilted
and Newport ripped through their defence with 5 tries ? the last 4 converted by full-back Glyn Bram.
Newport vice captain David Burcher scored his first hat-trick for the club, and Ken Davies scored 2 tries
in as many minutes. The Beddau side refused to be overawed by their more illustrious opponents and
their terrier like efforts made them the more effective side in the first 40 mins. Newport made heavy
work of taking the sting out of a lively Beddau side and although they did race in for 6 tries, poor
handling by the backs robbed them of a much bigger victory. Jeff Watkins and David Waters were
dominant and the Newport front row gave their opposites a torrid time.
After Beddau had taken a 26 min lead through a Ray Shearon dropped goal, Neil Brown scored to edge
Newport ahead at half-time. David Burcher?s first try 9 mins into the 2nd half, signalled the end of
Beddau's cup hopes. They held out until the 24th min when Burcher and Davies each crossed twice in
the space of 11 minutes to shatter Beddau's last hopes.
